Quality of Fotos

Discussion of the version of HanDBase that runs on the iPhone and iPod touch devices. This includes the synchronization conduits as well.

Quality of Fotos

Postby hopper.kiel » Sat Aug 18, 2012 3:07 am

Hi,
when I take pictures within HanDBase the iPhone camera has problems to take sharp pictures and I cannot set the focus manually. Resulting pictures are blurred and poorly or not visible.
Reading/focussing on barcodes works fine, but I also want to get proper pictures for a database holding pictures of items and barcode-numbers for lookups from other databases.
Cropping feature for images would also come in handy but the quality of fotos is really mission critical for my purpose.
Thanks for any help,
Robert

Oops,
seems to be an inconsistent probleme.
Checked the problem again just a minute ago and everything seems to work fine now.
Maybe some reboot or on/off state of the iphone did sort out the problem...
I'll let you know, how things go on.

Brian,
assumably scanning Barcodes does affect the autozoom-function.
I've created a database with scanning-barcode plus taking-picture feature. After the first barcode-scan the autofocus on pictures is corrupt.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for following up on this. I mistakenly overlooked your post. In testing this, I'm not able to duplicate it so far. Are you finding that after your first scan, the autofocus doesn't work in the scanner interface or when you return to the camera app?
Also, please confirm if you are using an iPhone or an iPod Touch, the model/version and the version of iOS you are using.
Kind Regards,

I, too, have encountered the autofocus issue but chalked it up to low battery. After sitting on charger a bit, the autofocus seems to resume normal function. I've also tried just wiping the camera lens with clean cloth when battery wasn't as low as previously expererienced and sometimes that helps. It doesn't seem like a HanDBase issue but possibly an iOS issue.

I'll follow this item with some interest because I still encounter the focus issue from time-to-time on iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1 and firmware 2.0.10

Thanks for that bit of information, Marty. I'm going to do some more experimenting, but in my time trying so far haven't been able to duplicate it.

As you alluded to, we don't have any control or say over the auto focus. One of the nice things about iOS is that they made it easy to call the camera function from within an app. I just call some function and the OS handles the rest. It returns a photo if you selected/took one and then I save the file. So there is not much we could have to do with the auto focus. That said, if it's related to the barcode scanner, then it's possible the library we use does something with the auto focus- they are using it in a different way than a regular photo as they need to recognize and process it. So Marty are you having focus issues after using the barcode or just on normal use?

I realized after my post y'day that I didn't clarify that my autofocus issues were detected during barcode scanning and when the issue arises, it seems to be after having recently scanned a few barcodes. The frequency is difficult to pin down, because my implementation is in a personal wine cellar set of DB's and it was more noticeable during initial bottle-tagging & inventory. As much as I'd enjoy exercising the barcode scanning on a daily basis by consuming bottles (or buying more), I have to set some limits on both fronts. So I'm scanning maybe a few times per week on average.

I'll try a re-inventory batch of transactions and post an update on observations.
