HanDBase not working with 2.3.4 (Ginger Bread)

Discuss plans for a future version of HanDBase for the Google Android platform

HanDBase not working with 2.3.4 (Ginger Bread)

Postby lnichoalds » Tue Aug 23, 2011 7:41 pm

Hello,
I just tried to run HanDBase on my Motorola Atrix 4G phone which was updated from 2.2 to 2.3. I have noticed that if I run HanDBase on the phone and open a DB, all I get is a white box. It is possible to get to the General Database Settings screen, which shows up normally. So this issue seems to be strickly related to displaying the data.
Thanks,

Have you uninstalled/re-installed HanDBase?

I have HanDBase running on my Droid X and Gingerbread... no problems that I have found....

I was running a leaked version for about 2 months before I had to sbf my phone back to Froyo so I could get the official GB. No problems the whole time.
Have a good day

Hello,

Thanks for posting. While my phone only has 2.2.1, my tablet runs Gingerbread. HanDBase is working fine on it.

As Curt noted, I also recommend uninstalling / reinstalling. If you did an upgrade while data was still on the device, you may actually need to factory reset your device and then reinstall stuff. I've seen upgrades not done on a clean device get a little messy for the programs later on.

Hi,

I agree with the others that I don't think it's Gingerbread related- I've been using Gingerbread on my Nexus One since June and no issues with it. It also runs on 3.0 just fine so I doubt something has become incompatible. That said, it could be related to the upgrading process as Brian alluded to. Give his suggestions and try and if they don't help we can look further into what can be going wrong!

Sorry, I should have mentioned it, but uninstalling and reinstalling was one of the first things I tried. Brian, do I understand your comment that you have to remove the DBs from the phone prior to any upgrade? I did have my DBs on the phone when I did the uninstall and re-install, but I was under the impression that this process was supposed to work by not requiring removal of the data. If you are talking about the Android update, HanDBase would be the only application that seems to be have any problem. My carrier (AT&T) just pushed out the 2.3.4 version yesturday, so it is very new and maybe has slightly different bits? I am wondering if anyone else that received the same OS push was having the same issue.
Thanks for you guys inputs.

Hello,

Thanks for the update. Let's try something to see if we can get you up and running:

1. Open your file explorer on your phone to the "HanDBase" directory found at the root level of the microSD card.
2. All of your HanDBase databases are listed there. Select and move them to a different folder of your choosing.
3. Exit your file explorer, and try to open HanDBase. Does it open successfully?

If so... exit HanDBase, copy one of your databases back to the "HanDBase" directory. Open HanDBase. If it works, move on to the next file. Repeat for each file. If it fails after copying a certain file over, please send me a copy of it.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. Here what happened:

1. Open your file explorer on your phone to the "HanDBase" directory found at the root level of the microSD card.

Not sure what difference this makes, but you might want to look at my post from July 31 "DB location on Smartphone". With my Atrix the DBs are not on the micro SD card, they are on my phones internal storage. So I am conducting this test from the internal storage.

2. All of your HanDBase databases are listed there. Select and move them to a different folder of your choosing.

I renamed my HanDBase directory to HanDBase-back, so I now do not have a HanDBase directory on the phone.

3. Exit your file explorer, and try to open HanDBase. Does it open successfully?

I opened HanDBase and created a temporary DB and exited HanDBase. This created a new directory (in my internal storage). I then copied a DB to this newly created directory. I actually found one, of about 10, DBs that actually appeared to work without getting the white box. Interestingly enough, when I did a DBSDync even the one that was working now has gone back to the white box issue. Additionally, in the process doing all this the HanDBase app aborted a few times (I reported the incidents via the phone to you guys).

Bottom line is that it sort of worked temporarily, but has reverted back to the initial problem. At this point I have not done a factory reset, but I am willing to try that too as a last resort. Please let me know if I can supply any additional info.

Regards,
Larry

Its possible that the Gingerbread update didn't work as well as it should. A factory reset is in order about this point.

When my Droid X upgraded to Froyo, I had to do a factory reset. When I upgraded to Gingerbread, I had to sfb my phone, thus a factory reset was not needed at that point.

Okay I will do a factory reset. I noticed that there is an option to do either the internal storage or both SD and interal storage. Is it necessary to do both or just the internal storage? BTW what is "sfb".
Thanks

Factory reset is done, but the problem persists. Now i have to re-install all the apps. Great...now what?

sfb was suppose to be sbf.... that is a low level reload of an operating system for the phone. not for the faint of heart since many things can go wrong doing that. I researched for 3 weeks before doing it.... my phone had started to become a problem that was attributed with the leaked load that I did with Gingerbread.

The Atrix is doing something that other Android phones do not do. Allow the internal storage to be seen at the computer level without having root access.

The factory reset should have worked.

If you go to Settings->Applications->HanDBase ...... do you see an option to move it to the SD card?

that is about my last idea.
