First, make sure you have the appropriate space available on your handheld. The space required for the program itself is 63 Kb. The thesaurus data takes up 289 Kb. You will need at least 352 Kb free to be able to install and run the Thesaurus/SpellCheck application. If you wish to Install the Supplemental Spelling Dictionary you will need an additional 421 Kb for a total of 773 Kb.

Please Note: Thesaurus/SpellCheck has the ability to have additional supplemental Spelling wordlists installed. These Wordlists will take up additional memory. The size of these Wordlists will be indicated and you will need to make sure you have the appropriate memory available to install any additional wordlists.

To see if you have enough memory, access the Applications menu on your Palm OS powered handheld and then access the Menu. Select Info from the App menu.

Then, if not highlighted, select the Size button at the bottom. At the top of your screen it will indicate the Total amount of memory and how much is available.

If you do not have at least the appropriate amount free, you will either have to choose to delete apps, or choose to not install this program until you have that amount of free memory.

Preferences

From the Options pull down menu, you can bring up the Preferences choice, which will allow you to set various preferences for the program's behavior.

List Box Options

This option chooses what the program will do when you select an item in the word list box with the stylus. There are three possible options for this preference

  • Lookup word selected - If you select this option then the program will run a search on the word you selected.
  • Copy selected word to clipboard - If you select this option the program places that word in the clipboard for later pasting into another application (such as Memopad).
  • Copy and lookup selected word - will do both of the above actions.

Maximum Matches

Here you set the maximum number of synonyms (for Thesaurus Mode) or suggestions (for SpellCheck). You can choose between 5 and 80 matches, in increments of 5. To optimize the program for speed, select a lower setting. To maximize your search breadth, select a higher setting.

Startup Lookup Options

This option allows you to choose how the program will look up words upon startup. There are three possible options for this preference.

  • Remember Last Word - This will remember the last word you looked up when you were previously in the application.
  • Lookup Word from Clipboard - This option will lookup whatever word is currently in the Palm clipboard. This is useful if you are in another application, that does not have built in support for Thesaurus/SpellCheck, and you want to use those options on a word. Simply copy the word and it will be placed in the clipboard. Then when you open Thesaurus/Spellcheck it will use that word to look up synonyms.
  • Do Nothing - Selecting this option will allow you to start with a clean slate. No words will be automatically looked up. This option is the Default option when the application is installed.

Instructions For Use

Launching Thesaurus/Spellcheck
To launch Thesaurus/Spellcheck on your PalmOS device, tap the icon labeled Thesaurus.

Selecting a Mode
There are two modes to the Thesaurus/Spellcheck program; Thesaurus Mode and SpellCheck Mode. In Thesaurus mode, any search will yield a list of synonyms, whereas in SpellCheck mode, a search may yield nothing - if it is spelled correctly, or a list of possible correct spellings. To choose a mode simply select the appropriate Tab when in the application.

The Main Screen
In Thesaurus mode the screen contains one Field, Enter Word, and one Button, Find Word. In addition there are word form tabs along the side of the result box. In SpellCheck mode the screen contains one Field, Enter Word, and two Buttons, Find Word and Add Word. While the program is searching a small clock will show in the upper left corner, to let you know that it is still searching. To the right of the Enter Word field at the top, there is a small arrow indicator. Tapping this indicator will bring up a list of the last 15 words previously looked up.

Thesaurus Mode
To put the program into Thesaurus mode, select the Tab at the top of the screen labeled 'Thesaurus'.

To look up a word, tap the Enter Word field line and then write in a word. Press the 'Find Word' button to see the synonyms for the word. The synonyms will appear in the Box below. You can limit the search results by pressing the word form buttons running along the side of the box. By pressing 'Noun', for example, you will see only nouns that match the above word. By pressing 'All' you will return to showing all word types. When 'All' is selected you will see an abbreviation in []'s showing what type of word each match is, ie [V]. When running a search, the 'Find Word' button will change into a (Cancel) button. Tapping (Cancel) will stop the search.

If there are multiple synonyms for a word, you will see the synonyms past the first, numbered from 2 on. You will be able to see a maximum of 80 words, depending on what you have set the Maximum Matches to in the Preferences. An arrow will appear in the result box if more words can be viewed by scrolling.

Depending on the 'List Box Options' Preferences, you may be able to tap a word in the list box and have it look up the word you select, and/or copy this word to the clipboard for pasting in another application.

The program will always attempt to find the exact word you entered. If it finds the word you will see the word 'Found!' in the middle area of the screen as it looks for the synonyms. Once Synomyns are found the Result Text will indicate the number of Synonyms found.

If it cannot find the word you entered, it will search for the word as the start of another word. If finds it this way the screen will show 'Found within word!' as it , and the word that was found will replace the one you entered in the Enter Word field along with the Synonyms it finds in the result box.

If it still cannot find the word, it will search for the closest match of the word, and show 'Closest match!' while it searches for synonyms. The word's closest match will then replace the word you entered in the Enter Word field and it's synonyms will be shown in the Result box.

SpellCheck Mode
To put the program into SpellCheck mode, select the tab at the top of the screen labeled 'SpellCheck'.

To look up a word, tap the Enter Word field line and then write in a word. Press the 'Find Word' button to see if the word is spelled correctly. If the word is in the database, you will see 'Word Spelled Correctly", below the Find Word and Add Word buttons.

If it is not found, suggestions for possible corrections are shown in the result box below.

While searching, the 'Find Word' button will change into a (Cancel) button. Tapping (Cancel) while searching will stop the search.

You will be able to see a maximum of 80 words, depending on what you have set the Maximum Matches to in the Preferences. An arrow will appear in the result box if more words can be viewed by scrolling.

Adding Words
To Add a Word to Spellcheck, tap the Add Word button. The word currently in the Enter Word field will be the one in the New Word field, by default.

If the word you are adding contains any Capital Letters you will have the option of storing it with or without the Capital Letters. By default the checkbox for 'Convert to Lower Case' will be checked so the Capitals are not stored. You can un-check this if you wish to have them stored.

In the lower section it will list the Supplemental Dictionaries you can add this word to. If you have not set up any supplemental Dictionaries one called Default will be created automatically so you can add this word. If you have added any Supplemental Dictionaries they will be listed and you can select which you would like to add this word to. To add the word simply tap OK. If you do NOT wish to add this word at this time, tap Cancel.

Supplemental Dictionaries

This version of Thesaurus/SpellCheck has the ability to have Supplemental Dictionaries that add to the words checked in the SpellCheck mode. From the Options pull down menu, you can select Supplemental Dictionaries to access the functions for Adding new Supplemental Dictionaries or Selecting which ones, of those installed, you would like to use.

NOTE: These Supplemental Dictionaries will only work in SpellCheck mode or through other Applications that utilize the Thesaurus/SpellCheck spell checking functions.

You can select up to two supplemental dictionaries in your word searches. However using a special supplemental dictionary you can have up to three, in total. The special supplemental dictionary is called SpellData and a version of this is provided with Thesaurus/Spellcheck. If this SpellData.PDB is installed any spell checking will search through that dictionary as well as the standard ThesData file. This SpellData dictionary is not listed when you go to select or view your Supplemental Dictionaries. It is searched by default if included.

In addition to the SpellData dictionary you can create supplemental dictionaries on your handheld by accessing the Supplemental Dictionaries option on the Options menu. To create new dictionaries tap the (Edit) button and then tap the (New) button to add a new dicitonary. Tap (Ok) to save that item and then tap (Ok) to exit the Then if a word is not found you can add it to one of your newly created dictionaries.

If you try to create a Supplemental Dictionary and give it the same name as some other Data file on your handheld you will get and error. You cannot have muliptle Data files with the same name, even if they are different formats such as Doc or even HanDBase files.

To rename an existing Supplemental Dictionary you will need to select/hightlight the Dictionary you wish to rename from the list and then tap the (Rename) button. When finished renaming the Dictionary tap (Ok).

To delete an existing Supplemental Dictionary you will need to select/hightlight the Dictionary you wish to delete from the list and then tap the (Delete) button. You will be asked if you are sure you want to perform this action. To continue and Delete the Dictionary tap (Ok), otherwise tap (Cancel) to keep that Dictionary.

You can also install Supplemental Dictionaries that you find either on the DDH Software website, www.ddhsoftware.com/thesaurus, or elsewhere on the internet. When you install Supplemental Dictionaries they will be listed when you access the Supplemental Dictionaries option on the Options Menu. By default the first two you install will be selected to be searched but you can use the Drop Down lists to select specific dictionaries. To change which dictionaries you would like SpellCheck to search select Supplemental Dictionaries from the Options menu. Then from the Drop Down lists next to 'Dictionary 1:' and 'Dictionary 2:' select which dictionaries you would like to search.

You are only limited to the number of supplemental dictionaries you can add by the amount of memory you have available on your handheld.

NOTE: Using tools available on our website you can create your own Supplemental Dictionaries for use in the SpellCheck mode of Thesaurus/SpellCheck. You can find a program to do this by visiting www.ddhsoftware.com/thesaurus.
