How do I replace the Icons in my Pocket PC or Windows Desktop Runtime application using XN Resource Editor?
Product: General HanDBase TopicArticle Number: 326Creation Date: 01/15/2008
Due to the inability for the HanDBase Runtime Builder to currently add your custom icons into the Pocket PC and Windows Desktop Runtimes the following information will provide steps for using the recommended XN Resource Editor to replace the icons in the EXE files after you have downloaded them.

Before following these steps we recommend that you make a backup copy of your EXE files before making the following changes.

Please note that at this time, every time you rebuild your Pocket PC or Windows Desktop Runtimes you will need to follow these steps to replace the default icons.

  1. Download and install XN Resource Editor using the link above.
  2. Download your Pocket PC or Windows Desktop Runtime from the Runtime Builder.
  3. Extract the Runtime files from the ZIP file you downloaded.
  4. Open XN Resource Editor.
  5. In XN Resource Editor go to the File Menu and choose Open.
  6. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the Runtime Files.
  7. Select the EXE file that is part of your runtime and click Open.
Note: for your Pocket PC runtime if you have built the 3.x version you will need to do this for each of the EXE files in the ARM, ARMv4, MIPS and SH3 folders. If you built the 4.x version you will need to do this for both EXE files in the ARM and ARMv4 folders.
  8. Click the + next to IconGroup.
  9. Click the + next to MAINICON for the Windows Desktop Runtime. Click the + next to 128 for the Pocket PC Runtime.
  10. Right click on English (United States)
  11. Select Delete Resource from the Popup Menu.
  12. Click the Resource Menu at the top.
  13. Select Import Image Resource.
  14. Navigate to where you have your icon files stored.
Note: If you have your images saved as GIF or JPG files you will first need to save them as ICO files for this program to properly recognize them as Icon Resources.
  15. Select the icon you want to replace the default one with.
Note: In most cases you will want to use a 32x32 pixel icon that is 24 bit color, especially for Pocket PC. However if you want to gear your Windows Desktop Runtime to Vista users you can use a larger 48x48 pixel icon with 32 bit color.
  16. Click Open to import the ICO file into your Runtime EXE.
  17. Click the File menu and choose Save to save these changes.
  18. Click the File menu and choose Exit to exit XN Resource Editor.
You will want to test these programs before distributing the to make sure replacement icons work properly. This is more important on the Pocket PC platform than the Desktop. Note that on the Pocket PC platform, if you previously installed your application and have a shortcut in the Programs menu you will need to reset your device before the icon will change.
