Tips for synchronization on a Windows Mobile Classic/Professional (Pocket PC) device, with touchscreen.

The following is a checklist to make sure that your software on your desktop is prepared for synchronization, and that you are performing the correct steps for the synchronization.

A. In order for data to synchronize between a HanDBase database on a Windows Mobile Classic/Professional (Pocket PC) device, with a touchscreen, and a HanDBase database on a desktop computer, you need to verify the following:

1. You need to make sure you have set up a Partnership in Microsoft Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista and Windows 7).

B. When you are ready to perform a sync of the data, you need to be sure to do the following:

1. Make sure that you close the HanDBase program on the handheld before you perform a synchronization with the desktop.

On a Windows Mobile Classic/Professional (Pocket PC) device, with a touchscreen, the X button in the top right corner of the screen does NOT generally close a program. The X in the top right corner hides a program, but keeps the program running in the background.

When you have HanDBase on screen, use Exit from the Menu option in HanDBase, or from the File menu if you don't see Menu, in order to close the program. You will want to do this before you synchronize with the desktop to make sure that any database that you had open is saved and closed.

2. If you open your HanDBase database in HanDBase Desktop on the desktop computer, you should close the database on the desktop and Exit the HanDBase Desktop before you synchronize the handheld device. When a database is open, the quickest way to save and close the database is to use the "Home" button. If the HanDBase Desktop is not closed before you synchronized then when you re-open the database you won't see the changes you made but rather a cached copy of the previous database.

3. Make sure that you synchronize with the HanDBase Conduit. The HanDBase Conduit does not run constantly like ActiveSync itself does. The HanDBase Conduit will run when you first connect your device to the computer (unless you specified for it not to do so when you ran the installation program). You can also manually start the conduit, if you leave your device connected, from the Start Menu at Start - Programs(All Programs) - HanDBase 4 - Synchronization - Windows Mobile - Synchronize

When you run the install program for HanDBase (the install program for HanDBase Plus, HanDBase Professional, HanDBase Enterprise, etc) on the desktop computer, one of the options during the installation will be "Setup HanDBase Conduit to automatically Sync on handheld connection". By default, that option is selected. When that option remains selected, then the HanDBase Conduit will start automatically whenever the handheld device is connected to the desktop computer. If you remove the checkmark from that option when you run the install program, then you will have to manually synchronize the conduit (from the Start Menu at Start - Programs(All Programs) - HanDBase 4 - Synchronization - Windows Mobile - Synchronize). If you disable that option when you run the install program, the only way to enable the automatic synchronization is to run the install program again, and make sure that a checkmark is in the checkbox next to that option when you run the install program. We recommend you leave that option checked during installation.

C. If you have everything set up correctly (section A), and you are closing the database or the program before a sync, and you are running the HanDBase Conduit to perform a sync (section B) and your data still does not synchronize, then consider the following:

1. Synchronization will only occur with databases that are in the HanDBase folder in My Documents either in Main Memory or on a Memory Card. If you move a database to a memory card, make sure that you've created a My Documents folder at the ROOT of the card and then created a HanDBase folder in that folder and put your databases there.

2. Do you get any messages in the HanDBase sync log after running the HanDBase conduit? If so, make sure to read the log message after the synchronization. If necessary, you can send that log message to technical support at support@ddhsoftware.com. To view the log, you can go to the Start Menu in Windows, and choose Start - Programs(All Programs) - HanDBase 4 - Synchronization - Windows Mobile - View Conduit Log. When you are viewing the log, you can save it as a separate file and send that file as an attachment through email.
